Student consent in learning analytics: Finding a way out of the labyrinth

http://uni-of-nottingham.adobeconnect.com/elesigjan2018/

Paul Prinsloo, Research Professor in Open and Distance Learning, Department of Business Management, University of South Africa

12 noon GMT, Monday 29 January 2018.

User consent in the collection, analysis and use of their data remains highly problematic despite advances in regulatory and legal environments, greater transparency, and public awareness regarding the increasing ubiquity of surveillance. Evidence suggests that despite concerns and awareness about privacy and downstream use of personal data, users are not always rational or make informed decisions regarding trusting online service providers and continue to exchange personal data for (perceived or real) services/benefits.

In higher education contexts, students consented to the collection, analysis and use of their data as part of the learning contract with institutions. Institutions then had the contractual and fiduciary duty to ensure not only the protection of this data, but also to regulate legitimate use of this data, often without students knowing the extent to which their data are used to shape their learning experiences. With the increasing volume, velocity and variety of data available to institutions, the initial consent at the point of registration increasingly does not warrant the unrestrained and opaque use of students' data. As learning analytics fall outside the purview of Institutional Review Boards, we need to seriously consider the ethical and moral implications of student consent.

FW: Book Launch: Mass Intellectuality and Democratic Leadership in Higher Education - 2nd Feb, 4.30pm

Birmingham Autonomous University Collective are organising the following event (supported by MGSISRFWestmere UGS and CPT):

Mass Intellectuality and Democratic Leadership in Higher Education (edited by Prof. Richard Hall and Dr. Joss Winn)

Book launch

4.30 – 7.30pm, Friday 2nd February 2018

Dinner buffet will be provided between 6.30 – 7.30pm

Westmere House, University of Birmingham

Register here or by emailing us at bau.comms@outlook.com

This book critically analyses intellectual leadership in the university, exploring ongoing efforts from around the world to create alternative models for organising higher education and the production of knowledge. Its authors offer their experience and views from inside and beyond the structures of mainstream higher education, in order to reflect on efforts to create alternatives. The authors argue that mass higher education is at the point where it no longer reflects the needs, capacities and long term interests of global society. An alternative role and purpose is required, based upon 'mass intellectuality' or the real possibility of democracy in learning and the production of knowledge.

The event will be split into short interactive sessions.

Richard Hall and Joss Winn (the editors) will introduce the book at large, followed by a short discussion. Then, chapter authors Joyce Canaan, Tom Henfrey, and Jenny Pearce will deliver short presentations.

The second half of the event will involve a workshop inspired by Gordon Asher's reflective piece at the end of the book. Small group discussions will be facilitated by BAU members.

Spaces are limited - if you cannot attend anymore, please let us know.

WIAS Workshop: Academic Labour, Digital Media and Capitalism

Wednesday 31 January 2018

13:00-17:00

309 Regent Street

University of Westminster

London W1B 2HW

This workshop marks the publication of the special issue "Academic Labour, Digital Media and Capitalism" in tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique. We will hear presentations by experts who have contributed to the issue: guest editor Thomas Allmer (University of Stirling), Karen Gregory (University of Edinburgh) and Jamie Woodcock (LSE).

Modern universities have always been embedded in capitalism in political, economic and cultural terms. In 1971, at the culmination of the Vietnam War, a young student pointed a question towards Noam Chomsky: "How can you, with your very courageous attitude towards the war in Vietnam, survive in an institution like MIT, which is known here as one of the great war contractors and intellectual makers of this war?" Chomsky had to admit that his workplace was a major organisation conducting war research, thereby strengthening the political contradictions and inequalities in capitalist societies.

Today, universities are positioning themselves as active agents of global capital, transforming urban spaces into venues for capital accumulation and competing for international student populations for profit. Steep tuition fees are paid for precarious futures. Increasingly, we see that the value of academic labour is measured in capitalist terms and therefore subject to new forms of control, surveillance and productivity measures. Situated in this economic and political context, the new special issue of tripleC (edited by Thomas Allmer and Ergin Bulut) is a collection of critical contributions that examine universities, academic labour, digital media and capitalism.

Workshop presentations:

Anger in Academic Twitter: Sharing, Caring, and Getting Mad Online

Karen Gregory, University of Edinburgh

Digital Labour in the University: Understanding the Transformations of Academic Work in the UK

Jamie Woodcock, LSE

Theorising and Analysing Academic Labour

Thomas Allmer, University of Stirling

The workshop will be chaired by WIAS Director and tripleC co-editor Christian Fuchs. WIAS invites everybody interested to attend this afternoon of talks and discussions tackling the question of academic labour in the age of digital capitalism. A coffee break is provided.

Thomas Allmer is Lecturer in Digital Media at the University of Stirling, Scotland, UK, and a member of the Unified Theory of Information Research Group, Austria. His publications include Towards a Critical Theory of Surveillance in Informational Capitalism (Peter Lang, 2012) and Critical Theory and Social Media: Between Emancipation and Commodification (Routledge, 2015). For more information, see Thomas' website.

Karen Gregory is a Lecturer in Digital Sociology at the University of Edinburgh, a digital sociologist and ethnographer. She researches the relationship between work, technology, and emerging forms of labour, exploring the intersection of work and labor, social media use, and contemporary spirituality. She is the co-editor of the book Digital Sociologies (Policy Press, 2017).

Jamie Woodcock is a fellow at the LSE and author of Working The Phones. His current research focuses on digital labour, the sociology of work, the gig economy, resistance, and videogames. He has previously worked as a postdoc on a research project about videogames, as well as another on the crowdsourcing of citizen science. Jamie completed his PhD in sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London and has held positions at Goldsmiths, University of Leeds, University of Manchester, Queen Mary, NYU London, and Cass Business School.

Christian Fuchs is Professor at the University of Westminster. He is the Director of the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) and Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies (WIAS). His fields of expertise are critical digital & social media studies, Internet & society, political economy of media and communication, information society theory, social theory and critical theory. He co-edits the open-access journal triple:Communication, Capitalism & Critique with Marisol Sandoval.

FW: Announcing the 2018 e-Assessment Question Conference

16th e-Assessment Question
'Risk and Reward: How do we deliver the benefits of e-Assessment?'
America Square Conference Centre, City of London - Weds. 18th and Thurs. 19th April 2018 in association with the e-Assessment Association e-Assessment Awards Gala Dinner www.e-assessment-question.com

We are delighted to announce the e-Assessment Question Conference and Exhibition, the 16th annual international conference on e-Assessment and computer supported assessment and qualifications.

Computer based assessment has grown significantly since the early days of automatic test publishing and certification. We have seen developments like paperless examination projects, e-proctoring, open badges, social media, BYOD, the growth of e-portfolios, the proliferation of question types, the rise of government initiatives and policies following FELTAG and Curriculum for Excellence, including the focus on technology in Apprenticeships, the expectations of digital natives resulting from rapid growth in technology and its use.

Both days will look at the broad spectrum of innovative e-assessment from assessment for learning and formative assessment in the classroom and the workplace, to digital delivery of high stakes qualifications, to the use of technology to support and enhance assessment, qualifications and certification - developing robust, reliable and cost-effective solutions to support learners, teachers and institutions.

This year's event includes speakers from across Europe and beyond as well as the UK educational firmament, including educational institutions, awarding and professional bodies and suppliers.

Bookings may be made for either day or both days of the event, with a discount for Charities, Schools, Colleges, Universities and those in the public sector. We are delighted to be working with the e-Assessment Association and their gala dinner to be held on the evening of the 18th April 2018 at which the second e-Assessment Awards will be presented. Delegates to the conference can optionally book their place at the dinner when booking for the conference.

We trust you or one of your colleagues will be able to join us for what will certainly prove to be an invaluable and thought-provoking event.

DCG Spotlight on digital capabilities (4)

Date:                     Tuesday 15 - Wednesday 16 May 2018

Venue:                   Radcliffe Conference Centre, University of Warwick

The fourth UCISA Spotlight on Digital Capabilities event will be held on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 May 2018 at the University of Warwick in the Radcliffe Conference Centre – a newly refurbished conference and hotel centre in the heart of the campus.

The theme of the conference is from theory to action; we will explore strategies and approaches to moving beyond the theory of digital capabilities, the frameworks and pilot projects, to implementation, and ultimately, change.

Presenters from a range of institutions will showcase their work, share their experience, approaches and strategies to help delegates improve digital capabilities, engage staff and students in their digital skills development and instigate change at their institutions.

We are delighted to be joined by Donna Lanclos, Library Anthropologist, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, who will deliver one of this year’s keynotes as well as an interactive workshop.  We look forward to hearing Donna’s provocative take on frameworks, models, identity and moving beyond metaphors.

Following positive feedback from last year’s event, we will be running parallel sessions on the first day, allowing longer interactive workshops and an opportunity to select topics of most relevance to delegates’ roles and interests.

This event will be of particular interest to those involved in supporting and promoting digital skills development, such as IT trainers, learning technologists, library and IT staff and educational developers.  We will be updating the programme online over the next couple of weeks.  Our previous events have sold out so early booking is advised.

We look forward to seeing you in May!

FW: Invitation to inaugural lecture if you are on the South Coast Wednesday 31st january

Inaugural lecture: #hashtags, handhelds and handbags: enabling students to blend life and learning

BU research Rachel Bowen

In this public lecture Professor Debbie Holley will explore the impact of technology as an enabler as our students navigate their way through increasingly complex and ‘messy’ lives, juggling debt, work, caring responsibilities and study. Technology is not only a tool, but offers insights into the lives of others, and possibilities of building networks and studying in different spaces. What should our response as educators be?

This interactive lecture will be preceding by a one hour ‘suite of innovation’ where attendees will be able to try out some of the innovations in learning BU offers its students, including Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard, augmented reality, Mentimeter and BU’s new Virtual Learning Environment ‘Brightspace’ . Our Learning Technology team will be on hand to help you get set up to tweet the event (#TalkBU), to download Google Cardboard App, Zappar App and chat about their work.

Professor Holley is the Professor of Learning Innovation and the Head of our Centre for Excellence in Learning at Bournemouth University. A passionate educator, she is a National Teaching Fellow and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. A JISC ‘Digital Expert’, she leads on digital innovation to encourage students to blend and personalise their learning inside and outside the formal classroom. Internationally her work is acknowledged through her research into the student experience and education futures.
