Fwd: University of Birmingham Higher Education Futures institute (HEFi) National Conference 2019

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT: SAVE THE DATE

HEFi19 Conference - Learning and Teaching in the Next Generation University

Location: The University of Birmingham

Date: Thursday 20th & Friday 21st June, 2019

What is the conference about?

The 4th Industrial Revolution will result in significant changes to many graduate-level occupations. Artificial intelligence will replace some existing skills and tasks while also creating new job opportunities. Knowledge production will become more distributed and knowledge will be increasingly accessible as digitisation continues apace and the range, scale and quality of online learning grow. Global megatrends in demographics, together with increased intolerance of inequality and the fast pace of change in the labour market will lead to new demands for learning that is lifelong, personalised, bite-size, integrated and industry-linked, supported by new, agile micro-credentialing systems.

In some respects, this future is already here. In this conference, we will consider questions about the 'next generation' university, and explore ways in which higher education learning and teaching must evolve to ensure graduates are ready for their futures.  Implications for the training of academic and professional staff will be identified, and a summary of the conference outcomes will be synthesised and made available to all participants.

Who is the conference for?
Academic and professional staff with an interest in and responsibility for innovation in higher education learning and teaching.

Where can I find further information?

Further information is available on the conference website, including a call for proposals for those who would like an opportunity to present.

We look forward to welcoming you to the University of Birmingham to share ideas on shaping the 'next generation' university.

Please feel free to forward this announcement to relevant colleagues in and beyond the University of Birmingham.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education)

PedRIO Conference: 'What is Institutional and Subject Excellence?'

University of Plymouth, 29th November 2018

https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/whats-on/pedrio-conference-what-is-institutional-and-subject-excellence

An increasing focus on Institutional Excellence in Higher Education has led to a proliferation of 'excellence' agendas (REF, TEF and, most recently, KEF). Pedagogic research crosses the boundaries between research and teaching and has strong implications for the knowledge exchange agenda and thus is perfectly situated to support (and critique) the excellence agendas. In this context, the Pedagogic Research Institute and Observatory (PedRIO) is delighted to announce an upcoming conference entitled 'What is Institutional and Subject Excellence?'.

Aimed at bringing together leading academics from across the UK and beyond, the conference themes include:

         Demonstrating institutional and subject excellence

Impact and evaluation – linking teaching and research

         Institutional excellence and policy development

Public Engagement and Pedagogic Research for impact

         Widening participation and institutional excellence

Conference registration is available here

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:

Louis Coiffait, Associate Editor at WonkHE.  Keynote title: 'High Seas: the shipping forecast for UK HE policy'.

The conference will take place on Thursday 29th November 2018 at the University of Plymouth, UK. For any queries, please email pedrio@plymouth.ac.uk

We'd like to keep in touch with you about upcoming events and funding opportunities available.  If you would prefer not to hear from us, you can stop receiving our updates at any time by getting in touch on pedrio@plymouth.ac.uk

Fwd: 4th UK Advising and Tutoring Annual Conference - Call for Proposals

UKAT Annual Conference 2019 – Call for Proposals

Transition, Persistence and Resilience: Academic Advising for Success.

11th & 12th April at Plymouth University United Kingdom.

UKAT are excited to offer a 4th annual conference that will provide an opportunity to explore new research, innovative practice and contemporary discussion on student support through advising and tutoring. We recognise that for many students the barriers to success (difficulty transitioning; lack of confidence; time and resource poverty) can outweigh the wealth of opportunities and advantages afforded by university experience. Students' development of persistence and resilience can be enhanced by a support network of peers, professional support staff, personal tutors and academic advisors and this conference will bring together members of these groups to share good practice, skills and knowledge.

The conference themes will focus specifically on how student support systems impact on the student experience. Abstracts relating to these areas are welcomed to cultivate student centred discussions within academic advising and tutoring, and should be themed under one of the following;

  • Transitioning students: support/activities and evaluation.
  • Developing Persistence
  • Building student Resilience
  • Academic Advising for Success

A sponsorship prize will be awarded for the best poster at the conference.

The closing date for submission of proposals is 31 October 2018

Please visit http://www.ukat.uk/conference/call-for-proposals for more information and full guidance on submitting proposals.

FW: SEDA WORKSHOP: Supporting Programme Leaders and Programme Leadership 13/09/18

The programme leader or director role is a complex and important one, crucial to higher education institutions core business: the delivery of higher programmes of study at under- and post-graduate level. However, it is little researched or clearly defined. There is evident interest in the Programme Leader role across the sector, borne from a growing prevalence of the role and lack of clarity and support for those practicing.

The responsibilities of the programme leader include academic leadership – that is creating a unified and coherent academic programme made up of a collection of modules, and the leadership of academics – supporting peers in meeting their specific responsibilities across the programme. Integral to both is the importance of creating productive and positive inter-personal relationships across a wide array of colleagues: quality and administrative officers, educational developers, academic peers, senior academic leaders and of course students.

The workshop will offer a developmental opportunity for programme leaders and those invested in programme leadership to explore the role in their specific contexts (Jenny Lawrence), consider how to better frame and define the role (Rowena Senior) and look to the various aspects of programme leadership in 2 break out sessions: Academic leadership; Programme level assessment (Ruth Whitfield) & Leading academics; Building effective interpersonal relationships and integrated working (Sarah Moore). Sam Ellis will close with a large group session exploring the development of programme directors' personal efficacy.

FW: Registration (Closing Soon): Enhancing Student Learning Through Innovative Scholarship 2018 Conference, University of Bristol 11-12 July 2018

Enhancing Student Learning Through Innovative Scholarship:

Exploring Transitions in Higher Education for Students and Staff

11th and 12th July 2018*, University of Bristol, http://tinyurl.com/q8uhhx4

In this fourth conference in the Enhancing Student Learning Through Innovative Scholarship series the focus is on exploring the transitions and mechanisms by which students and staff are supported and support each other in succeeding in enhancing their academic practice.

Transitions in, through and out of Higher Education impact on both students and staff in today's University.  Staff and students grapple with an increasingly complex HE environment with changes to the job market and challenges of uncertainty over their future they pass through a number of complex transitions into, within and out of higher education.

At the same time, the marketization of Higher Education and the impact of increasing student numbers, workloads and uncertainties over the impact of the TEF alongside REF are amongst a range of factors that both encounter.

Against this complex background, the interface between teaching and learning that both parties work within provides a challenging, engaging and supportive environment to work through many of these issues. The conference will address the following themes:

  • Enhancing employability through curriculum design
  • Confidence & resilience as key skills for transitions
  • Balancing student satisfaction with engaged learning
  • Enhancing learning through inclusive teaching spaces

in over 70 talks, workshops and presentations. In a new move for 2018, we are including a range of short 5 minutes talk each a "Snapshot" talk. Snapshots will be combined along themes into groups of 4-6. We'll then have a snapshot session where groups of snapshots are presented together followed by 20-30 mins for discussion at tables of how these ideas could be explored by delegates in their own contexts.

DISRUPTIONS, INTERVENTIONS & LIMINALITIES: CRITICAL PERFORMATIVE PEDAGOGIES

Stream Organiser: Dr Lee Campbell

In any pedagogical situation, you want the learners to feel safe. On the other hand, you must know that you may be faced with a group where there isn't a lot of dynamics, there's a lot of sleepiness and so on, and you [the teacher] want to somehow make them active, challenge them. Performative arts would have a lot of strategies (Manfred Schewe, 2016).

This stream asks: 'What happens when performative arts meet pedagogy?' and explores the possibilities of the emerging field of 'performative pedagogy' and its potential as useful and applicable to enabling learning across a range of artistic and possibly other disciplines. Papers comprising this panel from individuals and groups across all creative disciplines deploy pedagogic approaches with an emphasis on performativity to drive learning. They theorise, articulate and demonstrate some of the possibilities of using a critical performative pedagogy which may showcase good practice of making positive usage of performative teaching and learning.

Joe L. Kincheloe describes critical theorists as 'detectives of new theoretical insights, perpetually searching for new and interconnected ways of understanding power and oppression and the ways they shape everyday life and human experience'. (Kincheloe, Joe L., 2008. Critical Pedagogy. Peter Lang: New York). With a similar curiosity around power plays, a selection of these papers reflect upon how power may be understood in critical pedagogy in relation to 'the effects of power on shaping and misshaping the pedagogical act' as a means of (re)thinking how power relations may operate in teaching practice. Applying Michel Foucault's understanding of social power (1980), we envisage performance as a tool to make power relations visible (making performance as mirroring power plays that take place in all forms of daily human existence).

Raphael Hallett has suggested that students' work tends to be valued in terms of a very circumscribed, clean, clear presentation. Disruption, intervention, liminalities are forms of expression that do not necessarily correspond with conventional criteria that lean towards focus, precision, clarity, coherence and structure. Papers forming this stream deploy the strategies of performative pedagogy and relate in some way to 'disruption', 'intervention' and 'liminality'. Performance Art (and Art per se) is predicated on rule breaking, even on discomforting audiences, especially the elitist audiences of Live Art and Performance. As Dr Jane Munro recently pointed out at Tactics of Interruption, (Toynbee Studios, London, June 2016), interruption is about 'creating new forms – allowing interruption to shape the work – not hiding them'. A selection of these papers advocate the power of risk in teaching and learning, that explore disruption/interruption as a 'risky' pedagogic strategy to not only provoke students' participation but also to demonstrate how performative pedagogy can be effectively deployed to break implicit rules surrounding the exchange of power relation between student and teacher.

FW: Workshops on Academic CVs & Academic Interviews, London: booking now open

Dear colleague

I'm pleased to invite you to the following UCU professional development workshops taking place in London on Thursday 28 June:

Academic CVs - Thursday 28 June 09:30-12:30
This workshop will guide you through how to compile an effective, scannable academic CV: what goes in, what it's best to leave out, how to organise your information for maximum relevance and impact.

By the end of the workshop, you will know what you need to do in order to make your academic CV ready for the job market.

Academic Interviews - Thursday 28 June 13:30-16:30

There's a secret about academic interviews which hardly ever gets passed on: they are predictable. In fact, they are incredibly predictable. This workshop will explore why that is, and what, from an academic search committee's point of view, the psychology of academic interviewing really is.

We will look in detail at common interview questions - how to anticipate them, how to prepare for them, and what a good answer sounds like - so that you have all the tools you need to perform well at your next interview.

You are welcome to apply for one or both of these courses and as ever our CPD events are free to all UCU members.

Best wishes
