FW: Teaching and Learning Conversation - Free Webinar - Lego for Creative Strategic Thinking with MBA Students

The next teaching and learning conversation (TLC) free webinar will be facilitated by Lisa Day (Director of Studies, Online MBA, University of Liverpool) and Jeannie Holstein (Module Convenor Strategic Management MBA, University of Nottingham) titled “Lego for Creative Strategic Thinking with MBA Students”

Lisa and Jeannie will share their experiences of using Lego to stimulate creative strategic thinking with MBA students.  Having attended a workshop session run by Dr David Oliver from the University of Sydney Business School in 2015, Lisa and Jeannie were inspired to try out some ideas with their students. They will share some of the theory behind using Lego to encourage students to work through strategic problems in a way that is collaborative, reflective and creative. This TLC will be participative,  providing opportunities to try a few things and not just listen to us. Lisa and Jeannie both have experience of running a taught classroom-based session(s) that lasts between 1 hour and 3 hours for about 5 to 25 MBA students and will share their experiences of running these classes and the lessons that we learned from putting David’s ideas into practice. If you don’t teach strategy or MBA students then you will still, we hope, pick up lots of ideas that you could adapt for other audiences.

For full details please visit the TLC website

Dr Lee Campbell, Lecturer in Fine Art, University of Lincoln, UK
Lisa Gaughan, Director of Teaching & Learning and Senior Lecturer, University of Lincoln

Keynote: Fred Meller, Senior Lecturer, Performance:  Design & Practice, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London

PROVOCATIVE PEDAGOGIES: PERFORMATIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE ARTS is an international conference exploring the possibilities of the emerging field of ‘performative pedagogy’ and its potential as useful and applicable to enabling learning across a range of artistic and possibly other disciplines.

We welcome submissions from individuals and groups across all creative disciplines who deploy pedagogic approaches with an emphasis on performativity to drive learning. We invite papers, provocations and practical demonstrations that showcase good practice of making positive usage of performative teaching and learning.

All abstracts will undergo a peer review process to ensure quality and relevance to conference theme and ambition.

Notes on organisers and keynote speaker:

Dr Lee Campbell is an artist, curator and academic. His practice plays with the parameters of contemporary art that draw attention to the performative and the participative within an art historical vernacular and seeks to theorise, articulate and demonstrate how we may construct meaning between politics of space and the politics of artist articulated through visual and verbal languages. He is very interested in pedagogical approaches which prioritise performative tactics.

Fred Meller’s research interests lie in the process of making performance as a dialogical design practice. Specifically, how the principles and characteristics of Performance can be used to interrogate, explore and expand the nature of teaching and learning in the subject area.  In particular, she has been researching disruptive pedagogy and relationships of power in teaching and learning and design practice.

Lisa Gaughan’s teaching is informed by her background in the theatre and a working life in industry. Particular  theatre work has explored mental health issues, and has taken place in schools, prisons and NHS establishments and elsewhere.  She has also undertaken Solo Performance work and Community Theatre practice.

QMUL Educational Research Seminars 2016-17

Students' utilisation of feedback: A cyclical model

Dr Edd Pitt
Programme Director for the PGCHE and
Lecturer in HE and Academic Practice
University of Kent

Thursday 15 June 2017, 1-2pm, Room 1.04, Scape East, Queen Mary University of London, 438-490 Mile End Road, London E1 4GG

About the seminar
Frequently lecturers report that feedback does not always have the desired effect of improving a student's subsequent performance. It also appears that the students' emotional response, motivation, self-confidence, and subsequent effort deployment in future assessments following feedback, is unpredictable and warrants further consideration. The findings being reported in this workshop indicate a multifaceted interpretation of the student experience and, as such, a six stage conceptual cyclical assessment and feedback model is proposed.

About the presenter
Dr Edd Pitt is Programme Director for the PGCHE and Lecturer in Higher Education and Academic Practice at the University of Kent. His principle research field is Assessment and Feedback with a particular focus upon student's emotional processing during feedback situations.

FW: Call for papers: Social Media for Learning in HE Conference 2017

Call for papers:

#SocMedHE17: Making an impact

Tuesday 19th December 2017

at Sheffield Hallam University

The third social media for learning in HE conference: #SocMedHE17: Making an impact,  considers the role that social media - when used in formal and informal learning contexts - can play in addressing the major challenges currently being faced by Higher Education. This conference is accepting submissions from students, academics and managers from national and international HEIs.

The pressures on universities are hard to ignore. In the UK, the introduction of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and its core metrics – employability, teaching quality and retention – directly influence the direction of university strategies; while the National Student Survey (NSS) reveals specific contextual challenges that demand attention. Internationally, the titles may be different, but the pressures will be similar.
For the full call please visit:
http://go.shu.ac.uk/socmedhe.

#SocMedHE17 encourages submissions (research, practice or discussion papers) that provide evidence of educators and students using social media to make a positive impact on these challenges in formal and informal learning environments. Indicative themes include:

  • engaging, stimulating and challenging learners
  • reaching and engaging different groups of learners
  • innovative ways of meeting learning outcomes and enabling learning gain
  • enhancing employability outcomes
  • building staff and student digital capability and confidence
  • scaling up excellence for broader impact

Please visit the conference site: http://go.shu.ac.uk/socmedhe for the full call, booking and planning information, and outputs from the previous SocMedHE conferences.

FW: Registration Open: Engaged Learning Conference 6-7 July, University of Sheffield

Reconnecting through Engaged Learning and Scholarship: Impact, Frameworks, and Practice

Conference, 6-7 July 2017, University of Sheffield, U.K

Keynote speaker: Professor Mike Neary (University of Lincoln)

"…our great universities simply cannot afford to remain islands of affluence, self-importance, and horticultural beauty in seas of squalor, violence, and despair. With the schools of medicine, law and education and their public policy programs, universities surely can help out our cities and perhaps - perhaps - even our nation back together."

-          Ira Harkavy

Engaged learning and teaching can be understood as combining (inter)disciplinary knowledge with opportunities for students to learn with and from external partners, 'real-world' challenges, and experiences outside universities. At a time of political and societal change, what is the role of engaged learning and its related forms of educational practice, including service learning, authentic learning, and civic engagement in connecting with communities?

This event aims to share frameworks, projects and experiences through which engaged learning can be approached, practised, and theorised.

The draft programme is now available here: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/als/current/engaged/conference

The conference is FREE to attend and open to internal and external delegates - sign up here.

We hope to see you in July.

FW: Sheffield Hallam Learning and Teaching Conference 2017 - Registration Open!

Sheffield Hallam University’s annual Learning and Teaching Conference will take place on Thursday 29th June 2017 at our City Campus site.  This year’s theme – The Quality Paradox: Creativity and Compliance in the TEF World – invites us to explore how the amplified drive to perform consistently well in the key metrics (student experience and outcomes) impacts on our teaching, learning and assessment practices.  What does it mean to provide a consistently good student experience? It is possible to achieve consistency, whilst recognising and celebrating disciplinary distinctiveness and local contexts?

This year’s event begins with a timely keynote lecture by Professor Chris Husbands, Chair of the TEF panel.  This will be followed by a Faculty Forum in which each of our four faculties will respond to the conference theme by discussing the main challenges to consistency in their specific contexts.  This is a unique opportunity to make cross-disciplinary links and share solutions; we welcome an external voice.

The afternoon programme comprises more than 50 presentations from staff and students across the university, all aligned to the conference sub-themes.  It includes research papers, flipped workshops and posters which showcase some of the excellent work being carried out by Sheffield Hallam staff. A draft programme can be viewed on the conference website.

The conference is open to all SHU staff and collaborative partner institutions, but we have reserved a number of tickets for colleagues from other institutions.  There is a modest fee of £50 for external delegates.

To register for the event, please visit the Booking Page.  Registration will close on 23rd June 2017.

Please note that the conference team is editing the website on a daily basis to upload abstracts and information.

Even if you are unable to join the conversation on the day there will be plenty of opportunities for you to engage with the conference.  Follow us on Twitter: @SHU_AcDev  #SHULT17
