FW: UAL Event: 'Learning through Objects: Transformative Pedagogies in Practice'

Learning through Objects: Transformative Pedagogies in Practice

Wed 23 Nov 2016

09.30-16.30

UAL: London College of Communication

SE1 6SB (nearest tube Elephant & Castle)

Introduction

This one day symposium focuses on the value of objects for learning within creative art, design and communication higher education, while also drawing on innovative and effective practices from across the disciplines.

Objects have been used to support teaching and learning since the earliest days of art, design and communication education, stimulating curiosity and ongoing interest. The transaction between the object and the viewer enables meaning construction. Decoding objects develops transferable skills such as critical thinking and communication. Objects can help to develop a deeper understanding of one's own assumptions and beliefs.

Who should attend?

This event is open to tutors, lecturers, technicians, study support tutors, archivists and librarians who have an interest in using objects to facilitate learning, would like to know how to use them better, or have practice to share.

What will I learn?

This teaching platform will offer an opportunity for art and design educators to explore emerging best practice.  We will articulate the specific contribution of art, design and communication to the wider academic field of object-based learning. Themes covered by the day will include:

·         the use of archives and special collections in teaching

  • the object as mediator

·         the role of object-based teaching in developing skilled hand function

  • objects as a source of curriculum diversity

There is no charge for attending this event, and lunch will be included.

For details of the full programme and to book a place visit the event webpage.

UAL TEACHING PLATFORM SERIES

This event is part of a series hosted by University of the Arts London, exploring key issues in art, design and communication teaching and learning in higher education.
