FW: Changing Education? Researching Diversity and Participation - One day symposium at Lancaster University 28.6.16

Good afternoon

We would like to invite you to attend an event we are having in June:-

Changing Education? Researching Diversity and Participation

One Day Symposium: Tuesday 28th June 2016: 10.00am – 4.30pm (to be followed by a drinks reception)

This symposium will examine the changing nature of education and the ways in which this has impacted on diversity and participation in education both in the UK and internationally. As a whole the three keynote presentations will examine school and higher education, formal and informal, as well as online and face-to-face, educational settings. This will allow a consideration of the relations between educational change, diversity and participation in a broad range of educational contexts.

Amanda Keddie (Deakin University) will explore the ways in which the academies reform movement in England has presented particular opportunities and challenges for different schools/school types with a specific focus on matters of social justice. Ole Smørdal  (University of Oslo) will examine how students’ participation in digital and informal learning contexts can change their engagement with science education in school. Jeroen Huisman (Ghent University) will examine the relations between the characteristics of higher education systems and the diversity of student participation. Nicola Ingram (Lancaster University) will act as a discussant at the end of the day.

The symposium website is available at: http://wp.lancs.ac.uk/changing-education/.

For information: We are planning to live-stream the event so if you are interested in the content, but are unable to attend, please e-mail me and I will forward a link so you can watch it on-line.  There will also be a limited number of “slots” available for students to attend remotely – please let me know asap if you would like to do this.

FW: Registration now open: LJMU Teaching and Learning Conference 2016

                            Registration Now Open

LJMU’s Annual Teaching and Learning Conference

Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 June 2016

LJMU’s annual Teaching and Learning Conference provides an exciting forum to share and discuss innovative and effective teaching, learning and assessment practices, as well as explore findings from teaching-related research.  On the theme of ‘Supporting transition: exploring pathways for success’, this year’s two-day event will showcase the work of academic and professional service staff across a range of higher education teaching and learning topics.  These include the use of interactive teaching methods, learning technologies and creative approaches to teaching design.

Organised by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), Professor Peter Byers, with LJMU’s Teaching and Learning Academy, the Conference will be hosted by the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies at the Mount Pleasant Campus (Redmonds Building).  Vice-Chancellor Professor Nigel Weatherill will open the Conference to our keynote presenter, Professor Sally Kift, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), James Cook University, Australia, who will provide a holistic perspective of successful student transitions. We conclude day one with a presentation on ‘learning gain’ by Professor Stuart Brand, Director of Learning Experience, Birmingham City University. Professor Ellen Hazelkorn, Policy Advisor to the Higher Education Authority (Ireland) and Director of the Higher Education Policy Research Unit (HEPRU), will open Day Two on the international debate about learning outcomes and metrics.

The Conference programme comprises 75 presentations, from Faculty, Professional Service, partner institution staff as well as sector colleagues. This year, we’ve created 14 additional demonstration or consultancy sessions, in order to provide further opportunities to discuss ideas or to examine solutions to apply in teaching.  Another new development is the scheduling of four lunchtime networking sessions aimed at sustaining debate around pedagogic research during and after the Conference.  In addition to academic poster sessions colleagues from our Professional Support Services will be on hand to offer further advice and guidance on supporting successful transition.

Finally, why not take part in our photographic competition and the chance to win £50 in Amazon vouchers? Entrants must be registered and present at the Conference, the prize will be awarded at the end of Day Two. Please see the attached document for more information.

The Conference is open to all LJMU staff, students and collaborative partner institutions.  Additionally we warmly invite all colleagues working in post-16 education to attend. The event is free, but places are limited and early registration is advisable.

To access the registration form please visit the Conference website

Registration will close on Friday 10 June 2015
