FW: Call for papers! #SocMedHE16 Social Media for Learning in Higher Education

Call for Papers

Social Media for Learning in Higher Education Conference 2016 (#SocMedHE16)
“The Empowered Learner?”

Friday 16th December 2016 at Sheffield Hallam University, UK

#SocMedHE16: The Empowered Learner? will build upon #SocMedHE15’s Finding our Social Identity theme where we established our common interest in developing our understanding of social media for learning in HE.

This year we ask questions: are we empowering students by adopting and adapting social, open, mobile and networked learning and media? How critically are we shaping the opportunity that is emerging? How sure are we that the social, open and networked space, with all of the autonomy it suggests, is good for our students?

The conference will reflect a variety of positions including the student view of empowerment, the academic and teaching view, and the perspectives of support staff and strategic managers. We are particularly keen to receive proposals from students, and have an incentive to encourage this.

Please refer to the conference site for further information about the theme and for a selection of indicative topics. At the site, you will also find presentations and clips from the hugely successful #SocMedHE15.

Proposals should be based on evidence and experience of academic, or strategic practice; in any of the following formats:

·         Short papers

·         Workshops

·         Thunderstorm presentations

·         Posters

Please refer to the conference site for further information about the conference formats.

Accepted submissions will be eligible for writing up and inclusion in the #SocMedHE16 conference proceedings.
Accepted presenters will be encouraged to develop an artefact with creative commons licensing to accompany their submission, these will be made openly available during and beyond the event.

Submission deadline: Midday Monday 16th May 2016

To submit, complete the form on the conference site, you will need a title, 50 word abstract and 500 word summary and email it to socmedhe@shu.ac.uk.

Information about the Programme

Day 1 of the conference is a Partnership Symposium in which we explore the challenge of delivering an educational experience in places and spaces outside of the normal campus environment, for example through placement learning, work-based learning and trans-national education. The day will begin with a keynote address by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris Husbands.  More details about the programme - which includes sessions on education partnerships, higher and degree apprenticeships, teaching training, knowledge transfer, CPD for skills and international collaboration - are available here.

Day 2 will open with a keynote lecture by Professor Alexi Marmot, a professional architect and expert in learning spaces from University College London.  This will be followed by a programme of more than 40 papers and workshops on a broad range of topics, all tied closely to the theme of space and place in education. There will also be an opportunity to join The Space Tour – an immersive experience of seven university learning spaces, led by a tour guide.

Session themes include:

·         Engaging students in the classroom.

Are you looking for ways to liven up your lectures, or to encourage conversation and collaboration in a seminar? From magic tricks to visual aids, from mobile devices to maker-spaces, projects from across the university will help you to understand the barriers to student engagement and give you ideas to transform your teaching practice.

·         Building learning communities and strengthening cultures

Can you grow the culture of your department by changing the physical environment? How can you help students to become part of a thriving learning community through the use of technology or virtual learning spaces? Explore how course, discipline and university communities are strengthened by transforming the ways in which we interact and collaborate in both physical and virtual university spaces.

·         Beyond the 'university border'

Whether your focus is on improving the experience of Distance Learning students or preparing students for work placements, there are significant challenges associated with supporting learning in off-campus spaces. Find out how flexible- learning tools, innovative programme designs and new partnership models have been used to help students to learn in remote contexts.

Abstracts and more details about the programme are available here; this information is being updated on a daily basis.

Transforming Assessment and Feedback in Higher Education on a wider scale: the challenge of change at institutional level

Thursday 30 June 2016 from 09.30 - 16.00, Midland Hotel, Manchester, UK

This one-day seminar aims to debate efforts to drive assessment change beyond the individual and course level towards transformation at the institutional, faculty or departmental level.   It is designed to be a very interactive and informative day drawing on and debating multiple examples of assessment change.

The programme includes a keynote lecture followed by a range of parallel sessions which will hear and debate a series of 10 minute presentations.  The presentations will be accompanied by written material providing delegates with further details of the initiative.  A pre-lunch session will use our successful ‘nano’ (3 minute) presentation method to introduce delegates to other assessment change projects.  Lunch will provide an opportunity to find out more from these presenters.

This seminar event has been designed to enable sharing of research-informed practice, discussion and networking. It is guaranteed that you will come away from this event with lots of knowledge and ideas about developing assessment enhancement beyond the course level, drawing on experiences in 40 higher education institutions.

FW: Transforming Assessment Webinar Update - next session 4 May 'Reframing Assessment: This time it's personal' and recording from 6 April [JISC]

1) Next Transforming Assessment webinar: 4 May "Reframing Assessment: This time it's personal"

Presenters: A/Prof Abby Cathcart, Principal Fellow of the HEA (Queensland University of Technology, Australia) and Dr Darrall Thompson, Learning Futures Fellow (University of Technology Sydney, Australia).

A joint session with the Higher Education Academy.

There have been many major projects, initiatives and frameworks developed to enhance assessment practice at institutional, national and international levels. However, we need a deeper conversation about the significant barriers to implementation. Compliance pressures in both research and teaching can tend to cause a surface approach in even the most dedicated academics. It is proposed in this webinar to both present and engage with these challenges with a focus on transforming assessment. The concept that assessment methods have a significant backwash effect is clear when we see that the predominance of high stakes exam-based assessment throughout school years of study encourages both parents and children to focus on marks and grades as the only determiner of value and progress. The single mark given conflates the reasons for differentiation between students’ performances and obscures the diversity of orientation that may inform future study and employment. The culture of the single mark or grade needs to change and this webinar proposes that a focus on assessment is the way to begin this transformation.

2) Recording available for Transforming Assessment webinar held 6 April 2016.
"Meaningfully embedding program (Degree) learning goals in course work: Review at UNSW Business School"
Presenter: Danny Carroll (University of New South Wales, Australia)

The session explored the experience of the University of New South Wales Business school, who in seeking to satisfy the accreditation requirements of AACSB and EQUIS trialled the 'Review' assessment tool. Improvements to a range of assessment processes and outcomes were the result as well as greatly enhanced evidence for program learning outcomes.
