The accreditation of degree programs by professional bodies and quality agencies requires evidence of student learning and assessment outcomes against program goals. This evidence is often hidden in disconnected educational processes and so is often complex and time consuming to compile. Further this leads to disorientation on the part of students who can struggle to make sense of the connections between learning activities, assessment and desirable learning outcomes.
The session explores the experience of the University of New South Wales Business school, in seeking to satisfy the accreditation requirements of AACSB and EQUIS sought to trial the Review assessment tool. The trial of 'Review' started in four courses in 2011 and has since grown organically to being used in 160 courses per semester in three faculties. It was found that the the use of Review improved learning, teaching and assessment administration and reporting outcomes. The tool visually embeds program goals in course based assessment for the practical reference of students and staff. This session will also describe why Review can be characterised as a 'future oriented' assessment system.

Conference fees and booking

 

Conference fees include admission to all conference sessions, delegate pack, refreshments and lunch.  Delegates are welcome to attend the full conference or choose to attend either day 1 or day 2 only.

Day 1 (Thursday 9th June 2016) = £170, Day 2 (Friday 10th June 2016) = £170, Full conference (Thursday 9th and Friday 10th June 2016) = £340.  All prices are inclusive of VAT.

Inclusive Pedagogy for Widening Participation (Student-Generated Induction: A Social Identity Approach)

This workshop will cover the themes of Widening Participation and the concept of Student Generated Induction. The workshop is hosted by Exeter University and will be delivered by Dr. Nick Bowskill.

 

Inclusive Pedagogy for Widening Participation - This area of the workshop will be looking at how a concept of inclusive pedagogy fits ideas to do with widening participation and will explore the ways in which diversity, inclusion and belonging might impact the re-design of current practice in the areas of learning, teaching and research.

 

Student-Generated Induction: A Social Identity Approach – This aspect of the workshop will explore the concepts related to Student Generated Induction. This will address Students as Partners in the process of University Inductions; potentially achieved by breaking the concept down by college or discipline.

"A Brave New World"

Tuesday 6th to Wednesday 7th September 2016 at Loughborough University

 

The aim of this conference is to promote, explore and disseminate emerging good practice and research findings in Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research (MSOR) teaching, learning, assessment and support.  The conference will appeal to all those teaching Mathematics, Statistics, Operational Research or Numeracy, whether this is to specialist mathematics students or students studying components of mathematics within their degree programmes (such as bioscience, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering, nursing, physics, psychology, social work, etc.).

 

This year's conference is entitled "A Brave New World" reflecting the changing financial landscape, including the completion of the current HEFCE-funded sigma project, as well as the Government's new focus on teaching excellence.  The conference will explore ways in which learning and teaching in MSOR is developing to meet the challenges it faces.

 

The principal themes of the conference will be:

 

·         Demonstrating and evidencing teaching excellence in the mathematical sciences.

·         Responding to the challenges of assessment and feedback.

·         Teaching mathematics and statistics within the disciplines.

·         The onward transition: Preparing students for the workplace or further study.

·         Current developments in mathematics and statistics support.

·         Supporting the specialist mathematician and more-able student.

·         Engaging students with their learning of mathematics and statistics.

 

Interesting contributions from other areas of learning and teaching of MSOR will also be welcomed.

"When you flip, don't flop" - Making Flipped Learning Work for You: Simon Thomson

Abstract:
When we "flip" our classrooms it can be a daunting experience. There is a shift in emphasis from the "teacher" as knowledge provider (Sage on the Stage) to a more equal participatory relationship (Guide on the Side). This talk will explore the use of the "flipped classroom" model as a way of making best use of people, time and technology. Using the 4E framework (Thomson, 2012) as an approach for technology enhanced learning conversations, the session will explore how the flipped classroom can enrich the paedagogic experience for learner & teacher.

Biography:
Simon is a "flipped academic" (Bruton 2012). He is Head of Digital Pedagogy at Leeds Beckett University, an academic post in the Centre for Learning & Teaching. His current work includes the development of a conversational framework for technology use, with a focus on it's ability to enable, enhance, enrich and empower learning & teaching.
He has led on a number of funded Learning & Teaching projects including a JISC/HEA funded Open Education project and a Leadership Foundation supported 1to1 tablet device implementation, examining the effects such deployment has on learning & teaching and learners and teachers. He has presented and published his work at a number of national and international conferences, predominantly in the areas of learning technology and open education.
Simon was awarded an HEA National Teaching Fellow (2014) and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, SEDA accredited in Embedding Learning Technologies and an Apple Distinguished Educator.

We are pleased to announce that Sheffield Hallam’s annual Learning and Teaching Conference will take place on the 23rd and 24th June 2016. This year’s event is our 20th annual conference and has the theme ‘University Places: Educational Spaces’.

 

The call for papers is open and we are welcoming submissions for the Day Two programme (Friday 24th) that address the following themes:

 

1.       Transformative learning spaces

Although many learning activities are generic, some are closely tied to specific disciplines.  Accordingly, many institutional teaching and learning spaces are designed to accommodate a range of programmes, whereas others are designed specifically for disciplinary needs (e.g. laboratories or studios). Here, we invite you to explore how different teaching places are used to enable learning in different ways, in different contexts, from one of two perspectives:

                                 i.            How are general teaching places (seminar rooms, lecture theatres, virtual learning environments) used to enable learning in specific disciplines or subjects? Examples might include creative uses of rooms or online tools to support a single learning activity or a significant change in approach to large or small group teaching for a specific subject.

                               ii.            How are disciplinary places used to enable the learning of more generic skills common to/shared by many disciplines (e.g. critical analysis, group work, presentation skills)? For example, where places which have been designed and equipped for specific learning activities (e.g. experiments or performances) are transformed into writing spaces, dialogic spaces or reflective spaces for learning.

 

2.       Beyond the ‘Physical Campus’

Here, we welcome papers which explore the use of places which exist outside of the physical university campus as learning spaces.  These might be

                                 i.            Virtual spaces where staff/and or students interact outside of formal ‘working hours’.

                               ii.            Places of work (work-based learning, placements, part-time study, employers on campus).

                              iii.            ‘Satellite’ and partner campuses, both in the UK and abroad.

Central to the theme is the question of how we support student learning in those spaces, providing settings where mutually beneficial interactions can occur and communities developed.

During this three-day event you will get the opportunity to explore eportfolio platforms, learn how eportfolios are being used across higher education institutions and discuss wider issues regarding digital identity and eportfolios for employability. There will also be plenty of opportunities for networking, discussion and collaboration via hands-on workshops.
