Subject: Join us for 5-days of #creativeHE during #openeducationwk 7-11 March, all welcome, staff and students

Hello everybody,

We are back!!! And we are very excited!!!

The distributed facilitation team of #creativeHE decided to offer a mini version of #creativeHE during Open Education Week.

It is an interesting change for us as we offered the last two times over a much longer period (the last one was offered over 8 weeks). We won’t try to cram everything into 5 days. So, please don’t worry. Our approach will be, less is more ;) and our focus is on the interactions we can generate and what we can learn through these.

All you need to do is access the Google + community and start participating. No registration is required and everything is wide open.

Warning! A wide open mind is needed as well as generous commitment during the week to get the maximum out of it. If you have sorted this out, please join us at

https://plus.google.com/communities/110898703741307769041

On Twitter we will be using the hashtag #creativeHE > Feel free to say hello there as well.

We really look forward to learning together soon,

Chrissi Nerantzi (Manchester Metropolitan University), Sandra Sinfield (London Metropolitan University), Sue Watling (University of Hull), Dr Nikos Fachantidis (University of Macedonia) and Prof. Norman Jackson (Creative Academic Lifewide Education)

FW: Annual University of Glasgow Learning and Teaching Conference

Dear colleagues

Annual University of Glasgow Learning and Teaching Conference: Tuesday 12th April 2016:

'Active student participation in learning, teaching and assessment'

I am pleased to invite colleagues from across the higher education community to register for the 9th Annual University of Glasgow Learning and Teaching conference. This year’s conference has a wide range of speakers, including Keynote presentations from Professor Peter Felten, Elon University, North Carolina and Dr Tansy Jessop, University of Winchester, and I would encourage anyone with an interest in learning, teaching and assessment to book their place.

The Conference aims to stimulate discussion and debate about teaching, learning and assessment and is a key opportunity for colleagues from across the higher education community to come together to share experiences and learn about the innovative and exemplary work being undertaken here at Glasgow and in the wider HE community. As in previous years, it is anticipated that external delegates will bring other perspectives to our work, share thoughts and concepts and, we hope, leave the Conference with a renewed sense of creativity and inspiration.

Registration:

The programme, together with abstracts and the web booking form can be found at:

Throughout the day, in addition to presentations, posters and stands, I am delighted that delegates will have the opportunity to learn more about plans for the new University of Glasgow Learning and Teaching Hub and to explore technology enhanced active learning spaces planned for it.

Immediately following submission of your registration form, you will receive an e-mail note of the sessions you have booked into.  Please read this carefully and direct any queries to Fiona Bell: Fiona.Bell@glasgow.ac.uk; telephone 0141 330 3370.

Payment:

The delegate rate for the Conference is £95.00.

It is important to note that your booking will not be confirmed until we have received your payment; the deadline for receipt of payments is Wednesday 6th April 2016.  If payment has not been received by that date, you will be deemed to have withdrawn your booking.

Payment can be made either by cheque or by purchase order and should be sent to Pauline Kennedy at the Learning and Teaching Centre, Southpark House, 64 Southpark Avenue, Glasgow G12 8LB.  Unfortunately we are, at present, unable to accept online payments.

Please note that registration will close on Monday 14th March 2016 and that any questions about the Conference should be directed to Fiona Bell in the first instance.

Best wishes

FW: Transforming Assessment Update: next session 2 March "Designing for Learner Engagement with Computer-based Summative Exams" [JISC]

Transforming Assessment Webinar Update

[Via JISCmail - this is not direct email - apologies for any cross posting]

1) Next session: 2 March 2016 "Designing for Learner Engagement with Computer-based Summative Exams"
2) Recording: "Developing a 4‐dimensional interdisciplinary learning environment" held 3 Feb

Please forward to interested colleagues!
All sessions at no cost.

-------------------

1) Next session 2 March 2016
"Designing for Learner Engagement with Computer-based Summative Exams"

Presenters: Richard Walker and Zoe Handley (University of York, UK)

How do we prepare university students for high stakes computer-based testing? What steps should instructors take to ensure that students can perform to the best of their abilities? These are the some of the questions that this session will explore.

A Learner Engagement with e-Assessment (LEe-AP) framework for instructors has been developed which highlights engagement issues when introducing computer-based assessment and includes guidance for students and instructors. The framework touches on socialisation measures, preparation for test-taking, revision strategies, test organisation and the presentation of questions via the user interface. The session will explore the experiences of postgraduate education students taking high stakes computer-based examinations as well as reflections on practice after using the framework to prepare a new MA cohort (2015-16) and in mock exams held in November 2015 and January 2016.

2) Recording for
"Developing a 4‐dimensional interdisciplinary learning environment" held 3 feb 2016.

Presenter: Dr Chris Landorf (University of Queensland, Australia).

This presentation reported on the development of an interactive digital learning environment and associated learning activities for construction industry learners. The learning environment is based on a time-lapse 3-dimensional (4D) visualisation of a major construction project, the University of Queensland's Advanced Engineering Building. Additional resources associated with the design and construction of the building including interviews, design documents and contracts are also integrated. This provides a realistic context for simulated in-class activities and assignment work that activate student learning and enhance critical thinking skills using problem-based learning approaches. The project was funded by an Australian Government Office for Learning and Teaching grant.

In the changing landscape of the HE and FE sector, many new roles are appearing to support and advise our students. The guiding roles of academic faculty and central services are also being re-defined and explored. UKAT's first autumn conference aims to explore the current trends and methods of student advice, support and guidance, consider the broader context of student success, attainment and retention, and promote the sharing of experiences and innovative practice.

United Kingdom Advising and Tutoring is a professional body of practitioners and researchers interested in all aspects of advising and personal tutoring in FE and HE in the UK. UKAT recognises that effective personal tutoring and academic advising is at the core of student success, and aspires to lead the development and dissemination of innovative theory, research, and practice of student advising and tutoring in the UK and beyond.
