FW: Students' perspectives and experiences of independent learning

We are very pleased to announce that our research on students' perspectives and experiences of independent learning is to be launched by the HEA on 2nd December. This includes a free lunch time webinar on 2/12 : https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/research/research-webinars, plus we will be delivering a workshop at the Universities UK conference on Enhancing the student experience on 9th December http://www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/events/Pages/StudentExperience2015.aspx.

We found students from all disciplines were under-prepared for the reality of independent learning in higher education. Many  felt overwhelmed by both the volume and type of learning required.

A one-day event to share frameworks, projects and experience through which interdisciplinary learning and teaching can be approached. The conference focus is on the emerging practices of interdisciplinary learning and teaching and how theoretical pedagogical frameworks might enhance and further develop interdisciplinary learning and teaching practice for foundation level students, undergraduates and taught-postgraduates. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

·         Possible theoretical and pedagogical frameworks for interdisciplinary learning at Foundation and HE level

·         Value in using interdisciplinary learning to explore issues related to knowledge production

·         The impact of interdisciplinary study on learning experiences

·         Sharing of practice and experience in providing and promoting interdisciplinary learning opportunities

·         Interdisciplinary learning within the curriculum and in extra-curricular, non credit-bearing activities

Proposals for presentations of 20 minutes, workshops of 40 minutes, and posters are invited.

You are all warmly invited to attend our next open public lecture on 25th Nov at 17.00 featuring Ellie Russell, from the National Union of Students (NUS). Ellie will present on student engagement and teaching excellence. 

 

The title of her talk is: Student engagement: the never ending story

Abstract:

Engaging students as partners is a very popular concept but very challenging to make a reality. As such it is easy for partnership to become a buzzword – something everyone agrees with without really knowing what it looks like in practice. This interactive lecture will explore different dimensions of student engagement and partnership in the context of a changing higher education landscape.

Bio

Ellie Russell is the Student Engagement & Partnership Manager for The Student Engagement Partnership, which supports, develops and promotes student engagement knowledge and practice in the higher education sector in England. TSEP is housed by NUS and funded by HEFCE, Guild HE and AoC. Ellie joined NUS in 2011 after graduating from the University of Leeds with a degree in Politics and Parliamentary Studies. During her studies Ellie completed placements in MP’s offices in Westminster and the Canadian Parliament and was a trustee of Leeds University Union from 2007- 2011. Prior to starting university, she held the elected position of Vice President (Further Education) of NUS from 2005- 2007.

MELSIG (Media Enhanced Special Interest Group) is hosting a one-day event focusing on the role of (digital) narrative approaches in education at Nottingham Trent University on Friday 8th January 2016. The day promises to provide insights into how a range of narrative approaches are being used to support learning, teaching and assessment approaches across a range of learning environments. The guiding roles of academic faculty and central services are also being re-defined and explored. UKAT's first autumn conference aims to explore the current trends and methods of student advice, support and guidance, consider the broader context of student success, attainment and retention, and promote the sharing of experiences and innovative practice.

United Kingdom Advising and Tutoring is a professional body of practitioners and researchers interested in all aspects of advising and personal tutoring in FE and HE in the UK. UKAT recognises that effective personal tutoring and academic advising is at the core of student success, and aspires to lead the development and dissemination of innovative theory, research, and practice of student advising and tutoring in the UK and beyond.

The inaugural national Social Media for Learning in Higher Education Conference #SocMedHE15, organised by, and held at Sheffield Hallam University is now open for bookings.

 

The initial programme with authors and abstracts is now available on the conference website. This event will create a forum for academics, their students and strategic managers to consider the opportunities, challenges, and the disruptive influence of social media for learning in HE. The conference keynote is Eric Stoller, who will challenge and inspire us to review social media in our context, explore the opportunities of extending our networks for learning, and understand how we as universities need to respond to the Social Age.

 

The contents of the programme are now finalised, and timings added in due course. Twitter at @SocMedHE and #SocMedHE15.

You are invited to another in UCLs series of events addressing new topics and developments in publishing, library and information. Discovery and Discoverability will focus on innovations in how publications and collections are being enhanced for discovery, how they are exposed to search engines and discovery tools and disseminated through social media. It will present both the latest technologies and case studies from different sectors as to how users go about their seaching.

The keynote will be presented by Richard Wallis, a well known figure and speaker in the information world and who is now working as the global lead in the bibliographic implementation of schema.org. As Chair of the W3C Schema Bib Extend working group and as an insider in Google, Richard is well placed to discuss the state of play and potential for the emerging standard.

This seminar will bring together specialists in providing and supporting discovery engines, experiences from libraries and publishers innovations in delivering content. Delegates will hear more about discovery systems, how new tools are being deployed and used and how to make their content more findable. There will be input from libraries and organisations in the public and private sectors. Presentations will also come from Tom Hatton CEO and Co-Founder of innovative company Refme, a UK start up who will look at discovery through citations, established discovery supplier EBSCO and JISC’s expert Neil Grindley. Case studies will come from the ISSN International Centre in Paris and the University of Hertfordshire. The meeting is co-organised with CIBER Research.

Our next Teaching and Learning Conversation will explore the value of “In between spaces for learning” and their role in developing a sense of belonging.

Facilitating the conversation on Thursday 26th November 12:30-13:30 (BST) are Andrew Middleton (Sheffield Hallam University) and Kathrine Jensen (University of Huddersfield)

This interactive webinar we will reflect upon the experience of the learner and the academic in higher education and invite you to consider what in-between spaces (e.g. spaces that are outside pre-defined boundaries of the classroom and VLE) are and how you or your students experience them. Together we will come up with examples of in-between spaces and discuss their characteristics, benefits and importance to developing a sense of belonging.
