Information about the event:

The focus for this year is ‘Death of the Dissertation? 21st Century Approaches to Critical Enquiry’.  During the day we will explore whether the dissertation is still considered as standard in undergraduate programmes, alternative approaches to critical enquiry and the benefits and challenges of using different approaches. Professor Mick Healey, HE Consultant and Researcher and Emeritus Professor at the University of Gloucestershire, will provide a keynote presentation in addition to expertise from Middlesex University including Professor Carole-Anne Upton and Professor Ifan Shepherd. The conference aims to provide participants with an opportunity to discuss the issues surrounding embedding critical enquiry, share different approaches, celebrate success and develop understanding of the nature of critical enquiry in different disciplines drawing on examples from Middlesex and across the HE sector.

The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement and the SRHE, Postgraduate Issues Network are hosting a joint seminar to explore the impact of public engagement on Postgraduate Researchers and their institutions.
 

Few would disagree with the widely held view in the Higher Education sector that engaging with the public is good for research as well as the 'public', but what is in it for Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs), their supervisors and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)? 
Clearly Public Engagement is central to the impact agenda and highly topical, in terms of informing the environment section of the REF, but what do we understand about this kind of activity, what do we need to know and what insights can we share?  Through presentations and group discussion, this seminar will explore and provide insights into public engagement - the challenges and opportunities – from both the postgraduate and the HEI perspective.


Key questions include:
• How does public engagement activity benefit PGRs? 
• Should they get involved or does it interfere with their research? 
• If HEIs and funders want to encourage more of this activity, what kind of support do they need to provide? 
• What do supervisors and institutions get out of this, via their PGRs, and do we need more evidence to support the case for public engagement activity?

Building Confident Engineers: New to Teaching (NTT) Workshop

Tuesday 10 September 2013. IET Austin Court, Birmingham

Successful engineering graduates require confidence in order to solve new problems, work with colleagues and excel in their careers. It has also been identified that confident engineering graduates are more likely to pursue careers in engineering.  This workshop has been developed to consider how academics can enable engineering students to develop confidence through teaching, learning and assessment.  In addition, the sessions have been designed to align with the appropriate National Student Survey (NSS) questions. 

This is a free one day event for subscribing institutions and has a cost of £75 for non-subscribing institutions. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

This event is open to academics with less than five years HE teaching experience.

Workshop:  Issues, challenges and benefits of using student owned technology in classrooms

11 July 2013. University of Portsmouth

This one day workshop will share the lessons learnt from an institution wide deployment of a student's web-enabled device-based classroom response system. STEM delegates will receive free access to the system for their school/department. Therefore this workshop is a chargeable at £75 for subscribing institutions and £150 for non-subscribing.

UCL Centre for Digital Humanities, in partnership with the Higher Education Academy, are hosting a FREE 'unconference'* focusing on bringing together the e-learning and digital humanities communities to discuss the development of 'Digital Pedagogies' in University teaching.

'Digital Pedagogies' are innovative methods of teaching - using ICT tools to facilitate and foster a high quality digital learning space. There are big questions around how teaching techniques can be modified and digital enhanced to meet the needs of 21st century virtual learning. The objective of this unconference will be firstly to bring together these e-learning and digital humanities communities with what are often similar research objectives, and secondly provide a space to speak about current digital teaching techniques, defining areas for improvement and enhancement.

Fwd: Workshop: Graduate Attributes, Sustainability and Problem-Based Learning



Developing Graduate Attributes through the Sustainability Agenda and Problem-Based Learning

London South Bank University

Monday 15th July 2013, 10.30am – 4 pm   

This free one day workshop at London South Bank University focuses on the delivery of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and graduate attributes using an interdisciplinary 'Hybrid' Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. This workshop is the outcome of a three-year project funded by the Higher Education Academy's National Teaching Fellowship Scheme entitled 'Hybrid problem-based learning: a scalable approach to sustainability education?'; a collaboration between Keele University, The University of Manchester and Staffordshire University. The Hybrid-PBL approach has been developed to enable the delivery of PBL-style teaching to larger cohort numbers in a less resource intensive way for the teaching and learning of sustainability education. This will be explored during the workshop along with links to other pressing agendas in Higher Education including Graduate Attributes, Employability, and Internationalisation amongst others.

This workshop is aimed at educators from any discipline, from university, to FE and college educators, to PhD students with teaching responsibilities, who have interests in developing: 1) problem-based learning approaches, 2) education for sustainability, 3) graduate attributes and 4) the use of social media in teaching.

Developing inclusive teaching and learning practices in higher education is a key component of widening participation (WP) strategy. Pedagogies in higher education have the potential to contribute to creating inclusive spaces where all students can develop a sense of belonging and fitting in. This is strongly emphasised in the recent HEFCE/OFFA interim report, and is anticipated to form a central dimension of the national strategy for widening participation.

This timely seminar will launch Teaching Inclusively: Changing Pedagogical Spaces, a new continuing professional development resource pack that draws on the key findings of the Higher Education Academy funded project: 'Formations of Gender and Higher Education Pedagogies (GaP)'. It is designed for lecturers, academic developers, WP directors and managers and policy makers to critically reflect on the complex processes in which inequalities might unwittingly be reproduced through HE pedagogies.  It offers a range of 'think pieces' as conceptual tools to help address complex issues of difference, diversity and inequalities and to consider the ways that teaching and learning practices are intimately connected with identity formations and the subtle processes of exclusion and misrecognition within different pedagogical spaces.

The seminar will provide an overview of the key findings of GaP to illuminate the important relationship between widening participation and HE pedagogies. It will introduce Teaching Inclusively and the ways it has been specifically designed to support HE lecturers in contributing to WP through developing inclusive teaching practices.
