What can higher education contribute to improving social mobility in the UK? Two-day residential conference organised by the Higher Education Academy

 

The Higher Education Academy is pleased to announce a two-day residential conference on 26 and 27 March 2013 at the Macdonald Manchester Hotel, Manchester City Centre to examine the contribution of higher education to improving social mobility.

Higher education has undergone change in all four UK nations as the economy has declined and public sector spending has been reduced. Issues of social mobility, access, retention, attainment and progression however continue to be important across the UK, within higher education institutions, and for students, their families and society as a whole.

2012-13 marked the beginning of significant changes to the higher education landscape, raising concerns about the future of access and equality within the HE sector and heightening existing fears about stagnating social mobility. This two-day conference is an opportunity to:

  • Explore how widening-access partnerships and collaboration can be adapted to a more competitive environment and whether new approaches and delivery models are required across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
  • Extend our understanding of the contribution of higher-education providers to improving the retention, attainment and progression of students especially those from lower socio-economic groups, disabled or black and minority ethnic backgrounds in all discipline areas.
  • Review how more equitable access to employment, graduate careers and the professions can be achieved through higher-education pathways, including apprenticeships, study abroad and postgraduate study.
  • Consider the role of students in enhancing the quality and outcomes of the higher education experience for students from under-represented and disadvantaged groups.
  • Examine the actual and projected impacts of changes to the funding of higher education on access, retention, attainment and progression for students from under-represented and disadvantaged groups.
  • Review the needs of part-time students in the current context, including support systems and pedagogy for flexible learning.

The conference will include key note speakers, panel discussions, workshops, papers and posters designed to inform scholarly debate and provide practical ways forward.

HEA STEM: Annual Learning and Teaching Conference 2013: Where practice and pedagogy meet

Date: 17 Apr 2013 - 18 Apr 2013

Higher education has changed dramatically over the past ten years with advances in technology, the changing expectations of students, growing diversity and the increasing variety of higher education institutions. This conference aims to disseminate evidence based, effective practice and to examine how this impacts on STEM disciplines.

 

HEA STEM (Engineering): Workshop for postgraduate students who teach

Date: 15 Feb 2013

The day will focus on four areas: Assessment and Feedback, Teaching for Diversity, Small Group Teaching, & Professional Development and the HEA.

Deadline for submission of proposals is the 21 March 2013. Applicants will be advised in early April if their request has been successful.

Middlesex University was part of a HEFCE programme that had two related goals - the design and delivery of HE courses in partnership with employers, and to increase the number of learners in the workplace supported by their employers. Carol Costley is Professor of Work Based Learning and Head of the Work Based Learning research centre at Middlesex University.

Principal research interests include examining methodologies and epistemologies in work based learning and how they are additional to and support subject based approaches to knowledge. Within that looking particularly at work based learning as a field of study, especially transdisciplinarity, equity and access.

 

Jonathan Garnett is Professor of Work Based Knowledge and the Director of the Institute for Work Based Learning at Middlesex University.

Jonathan has twenty years experience at the leading edge of the development of work based learning programmes with public and private sector organizations in the UK and internationally.
Areas of expertise include Work Based Learning in Higher Education, developing the intellectual capital of employers, assessment of work based learning, assessment of learning from experience, higher education/employer partnerships.

The e-Assessment-Question 2013  Conference and Exhibition London, 20th and 21st March 2013    We are delighted to announce the 11th year of the e-Assessment Question.      This is the key Conference and Exhibition examining the practical aspects of e-Assessment in all its forms and its use from the classroom to the workplace.  The main theme for 2013 will be ''Using e-Assessment to cross borders and boundaries - working internationally - working across disciplines - working imaginatively".    As the use of e-Assessment becomes increasingly widespread, we are seeing greater innovation in the way these tools and technologies are used, in the breadth of assessment undertaken, in the range of qualifications and in the innovatory tools and techniques available to deliver e-assessment. The challenge amidst all the innovation and development is how to maintain quality, reliability and validity and ensure fitness for purpose. The conference will provide an excellent opportunity to hear and see practical guidance and advice about e-assessment and e-assessment systems.    Speakers this year include representatives from Awarding Organisations and Professional Bodies as well as systems and service providers.     The first day will focus on managing and planning e-assessment to ensure robust and reliable assessment for qualifications and learning in a challenging, ever-changing world. Day two will focus on developing e-assessment solutions to support the ambitions and aspirations of Awarding Organisations, learners, teachers and managers. Higher Education as if the World Mattered

A conference to be held on 25 and 26 April 2013 organised by: The Higher Education Research Group (Institute for Education, Community and Society, The University of Edinburgh) in partnership with The Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE)

 

CALL FOR PAPERS

While higher education is known to enhance people’s life chances, questions remain to be asked about how the goods to be gained from higher education are presently distributed. Despite policies that are meant to increase access to higher education for under-represented sections of society we know that in a highly stratified society and higher education system even widened entry does not guarantee greater social justice in relation to access, for example. Against this backdrop, broad questions that the symposium will address include: To what extent and how do higher education policies and practices make a difference to this world? What are present priorities and how could things be otherwise? To what extent does higher education address community and environmental concerns? To what extent are participants encouraged to make a contribution to the world?

 

This conference, and a book that will be associated with it, therefore, seek to explore social justice in and through higher education by examining recent policies and practices in relation to six broad strands of higher education: Research and knowledge mobilisation; Curriculum; Pedagogy; Access and participation; Institutional leadership; Quality and educational development. Contributions in each section seek to analyse the assumptions underpinning policy and practice, arrive at judgements about the extent to which the world is seen to matter and offer suggestions on how things could be different from how they are. Running across these six strands are concerns related to internationalisation, funding, and lifelong learning.

Author submissions
All submissions are subject to a blind peer review process. Proposals are invited for Individual Papers. Each paper accepted for individual presentation will be allocated a minimum of 30 minutes for presentation and discussion.

 

Timetable for submissions
All proposals must be submitted via email to fsmit@srhe.ac.uk . The deadline for submission is 1 March 2013.

 

Call for papers- Format for submissions
To maintain the high quality of papers presented at the conference, and ensure that the review process has access to a sufficient level of detail on paper proposals to take an informed view, submitting authors are asked to provide a short paper for peer review in two parts.

Please note that both parts will be required at the point of first submission, but there will be no subsequent call for fuller papers for accepted abstracts.

• Part 1 Abstract: a 150 word summary of the proposal which will be printed in the published conference programme and also made available at conference on the CD Rom.
• Part 2 Outline: a maximum 1000 word paper (not including references)

 

Conference Venue
The symposium will take place at Paterson’s Land, Moray House School of Education, Holyrood Road, The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, EH8 8AQ. All rooms are equipped with a screen and laptop.

The School of Education is located in the picturesque Old Town area (off the Royal Mile, or Canongate). It is a 10 minute walk (or three minute taxi ride) from Edinburgh Waverley train station to the School of Education. The City of Edinburgh is easily reachable by train and most airlines (Easyjet and Ryanair offer low-budget flights from several cities in England). Travel from Edinburgh Airport to the City Centre (final stop at Waverly Bridge, right opposite Waverley Station) by Airlink bus service takes approximately 30 minutes (and a single journey costs £3.50) and by taxi the cost is between £18 and £20.

The City of Edinburgh offers many attractions for conference participants considering spending the weekend. It also features a wide range of cafés, bistros and restaurants and a good number of reasonably priced hotels close to the conference venue (e.g., IBIS at Grassmarket, The Jurys Inn on Jeffrey Street, The Travel Lodge on St Mary’s Street, and the highly praised Salisbury Green Hotel, situated on the University’s own premises at Pollock Halls).

 

Conference Fees and Booking
Fees are £150 (£130 for SRHE members) and include all refreshments during the day on both days (excluding dinner) and the conference programme. Any overnight accommodation is to be organised and paid directly by delegates. Sorry, there are no single day fees.
