Fwd: SRHE Seminar: Inequalities and the global higher education market Monday 20th June

SRHE Higher Educational Policy Network

Inequalities and the global higher education market

Monday 20th June 2011: 1.00 – 4.00 pm

London Metropolitan University

This seminar explores global higher education policy issues and developments, with a particular focus on inequalities, values and governance.

What is wrong with global inequality in higher education?

Professor Elaine Unterhalter, Institute of Education, University of London

This paper examines and refutes the justifications that are made for global inequalities between universities. The ways these are played out in national and global contexts and the implications of failing to address these injustices are also discussed.

Regional governance of higher education: purpose, values and academic capitalism: the case of the small Gulf states

Dr Sally Findlow, Keele University

This paper analyses the interplay of academic capitalism and governance in the small Gulf States, noting how this has led to the fragmentation of both regional and state policy and raising questions about purpose and values in the global market.

Lunch will be available at 1pm and the event will start at 1.40. After each paper there will be time for questions and discussion, followed by an opportunity to discuss issues raised in both papers over tea or coffee.

For further details about the Higher Education Policy Network, please contact the network convenor, Professor Carole Leathwood, Institute for Policy Studies in Education, London Metropolitan University, c.leathwood@londonmet.ac.uk.

Subject: Interactive Classroom Technology and Group Learning
To: COMPUTER-ASSISTED-LEARNING@jiscmail.ac.uk

Dear All,
This workshop, in York on June 10th, may be of interest to learning technology people. The focus is on group learning for student development but it is also very much an experiential exploration of interactive classroom technologies (Stroup and colleagues refer to it as the network-mediated classroom). These technologies include voting technologies and interactive whiteboards etc applied to group and generative learning (far beyond setting quizzes). The workshop comes from doctoral research carried out at the University of Glasgow.

Best wishes,
Nick
