Higher Education as a Public Good: Critical perspectives

Monday 4 July –Tuesday 5 July 2011

New College, Oxford

The Society for Research into Higher Education Theory Group invites you to participate in a  2 day symposium examining issues underlying the concept of higher education as a public good. This is a topic much discussed in the light of recent policy developments in the UK and in many other countries. The seminar will explore its theoretical underpinnings from several disciplinary perspectives. There will be inputs from keynote speakers and participative discussions on the issues raised. The main speakers will each produce a short synopsis of their contribution for participants to consider in advance of the seminar. It is intended to prepare a book for publication based on the seminar proceedings.

Keynote Speakers:

Nick Barr; Professor of Public Economics. LSE London

Bob Cowen; Emeritus Professor of Education. IOE London

David Dill; Emeritus Professor of Public Policy. University of North Carolina

Jon Nixon; Honorary Professor. University of Sheffield

Paul Standish; Professor of Philosophy of Education. IOE London

Registration

This symposium will take place at New College Oxford and the fee of £125 (£155 for non members of SRHE) covers the cost of accommodation for one night in ensuite rooms and all meals, including dinner in the College on Monday evening. Rooms at the College are limited so delegates are advised to make an early registration to attend this symposium.

The closing date for bookings is 4 June 2011.

Fwd: David Nicol Public Lecture tomorrow.

Dear Colleagues, this may be of interest to you or colleagues who know David's work on the REAP (Re-engineering Assessment Practices) and the related JISC funded PEER project.

The last in the 2010-11 series of Open Lectures in Teaching & Learning will take place at the University of Greenwich in Queen Anne Court 080 at 5pm TOMORROW, 27th April 2011. (for directions and travel information see: http://www2.gre.ac.uk/about/travel/greenwich)

Professor David Nicol will speak on:

"Feedback in HE: Misconstrued and Misaligned."

David will look at feedback practice in HE, which focuses on the quality of feedback delivery, rather than the quality of feedback construction.   He will provide a rationale for the enhancement of peer feedback opportunities and propose principles for good peer feedback practice.

David has an international profile in research on assessment and feedback, and led the REAP project - see www.reap.ac.uk.  He is now leading the PEER project.

All students, staff and visitors are welcome to attend.   There is no need to book your place. The lecture commences at 5pm in QA080 and is about 45 minutes long, followed by a Q&A session, finishing by 6.30pm. A video recording will be made available following the lecture.

If you missed Alan Masson's recent Open Lecture, an Echo 360 podcast is available at http://bit.ly/DrAMasson.

Kind regards
Simon

Subject: Pedagogic Research in the Disciplines - Glasgow 12 May

Pedagogic Research in the Disciplines

Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow

Thursday 12 May 2011

This one day workshop will be of interest to subject based academics and educational developers interested in developing ideas for future research and sharing practice between disciplines in terms of approaches and issues in this field. The event also aims to identify future areas for developmental support within different disciplines. Participants will be supported to develop pedagogic research questions and methodologies appropriate for their discipline.

The HEA  is putting out a major funding call in May for 'Teaching Development Grants'. This event therefore provides an important opportunity for colleagues in the sector to develop ideas for potential research proposals and collaborative partners.

Main Objectives:

·         To find out what pedagogic research needs to be undertaken within different disciplines, and by the end of the day, leave with a research question and understanding of the most appropriate methodology to explore the research question

·         To identify similarities and differences in issues around pedagogic research between cognate discipline areas (STEM, Arts and Humanities, Health and Professions, and Social Sciences)

·         To inform the HEA's future development of relevant services to support pedagogic research within different disciplines

Programme:

1. 09:30 – 10:00 Registration and refreshments
2. 10:00 – 10:15 Welcome (and outline of the purpose of the day)
3. 10:15 – 11:00 Keynote (Dr Marilyn Hammick), including Q&A
4. 11:00 – 12:00 Workshops "Current issues in pedagogic research" in the following cognate groups:

·         STEM (Dr Mark Huxham, Edinburgh Napier)

·         Arts and Humanities (Prof Susan Orr, York St John)

·         Health and Professions (Dr Marilyn Hammick, Research and Education Consultant; Board Member of CAIPE)

·         Social Sciences (Dr Joyce Canaan, Birmingham City University)

5. 12:00 – 12:30 Plenary feedback - to identify areas of commonality and distinctiveness across the disciplines
6. 12:30 – 13:30 Lunch
7. 13:30 – 15:00 Workshop "putting things into practice" (x 4 subject cognate groups - facilitated by morning speakers and HEA)
8. 15:00 – 16:00 Plenary feedback

There will be a £50.00 charge to attend this event.
