It is recognised that the type of assessment that students undergo is a powerful influence on how they learn. However, in the concerted effort to ensure that assessments are rigorous, reliable, cheat-proof and able to cope with ever-increasing student numbers it can be difficult to view assessment as an episode of learning. 'Measurement' views of assessment still persist and the National Student Survey highlighted student dissatisfaction with the feedback they received. This event aims to promote assessment as an integrated part of learning. The day will cover the key aspects of assessment for learning with a focus on feedback. As usual there will be opportunities for discussion, reflection on practice and to hear 'real-life' practice from fellow bioscientists.

Work-based Learning and Assessment for the Next Decade

Assessment and Learning in Practice Settings (ALPS) is
hosting an international conference next spring. The conference
'Work-based Learning and Assessment for the Next Decade' will take place
at Weetwood Hall in Leeds, U.K. on 16th - 17th March 2010.
Speakers will review current and up-and-coming learning technologies,
and presentations and workshops will highlight the main factors
affecting the employability of graduating students. Abstracts are
invited for oral presentations, workshops, poster presentations and
roundtable discussion sessions within the Conference themes. The call
closes on 2nd November 2009.

Discussion will focus upon: the moral, economic and social obligations upon academics, the nature of academic work into the next decade and preparing new entrants to the profession for an academic role.  This develops the 2009 theme of the Society for Educational Studies: An Academic Life.  Debate will be supported by presentations from some key thinkers in the area of academic practice.

Learning to be a Professional: Using our own life experiences to develop principles for designing good educational experiences

Our own life experiences from which we have learnt what becoming professional means provide us with a fantastic resource from which to create good educational designs. This seminar is based on my own reflections on how I learnt (and still learn) to become professional in two different professional fields. Out of these reflections I will extract some general propositions and principles for educational designs that are more likely to be encouraging and effective in assisting learners to begin the process of becoming professional while they are studying in higher education.
The seminar will be of interest to anyone who is involved in designing and supporting the development of students and staff as professionals. Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies 5th annual elearning symposium

The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies will hold its 5th annual elearning symposium on 28/29 January 2010. The aim of the symposium is to try to bridge the gap between the 'techie' and the teacher, giving educators ideas to help them integrate elearning into their practice but also to inspire them to see where the online future could lead. The symposium is always well-attended by practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and institutions. Following last year's success, the two-day event comprises a very practical first day of workshops on authoring tools and elearning techniques; while these are complemented on the second day by presentations to inspire the mind with exciting ideas about the possibilities that online learning offers. We offer attendees a range of content from areas of more specific interest to our core LLAS community, to topics of wider interest to educators involved in elearning. We highlight best practice in using elearning and feature an exciting mixture of research and reports from practice to inspire our community.

Keynote speaker: Dr Berry O’Donovan [3]

Deputy Director of Assessment Standards Knowledge Exchange CETL (ASKe) and Acting Head of Learning and Teaching at the Business School (Oxford Brookes).

Her current research is focused on assessment and feedback, cultivating student community and the intellectual development of management undergraduates.

Sessions:

All sessions are practice focused and include:

  • University of Kent case studies on formative assessment practice in:
    • Self/peer assessment
    • Group work
    • Assessing practical skills
    • Using journals/reflection
  • Using technology to enhance formative assessment
Confirmed external speakers include:
  • Prof Peter Hartley, Professor of Education Development, Director of the Centre for Academic Practice and Head of the Educational Development Team, University of Bradford.
  • Dr Karen Handley, Senior Lecturer in HRM and Organisational Behaviour and a Fellow at the Brookes Centre for Teaching and Learning. Her particular interest is in student engagement with feedback.
